We all know you should get the oil in your car changed every 3 months or every 3 to 5 thousand miles. But when should you get your boiler serviced? It’s a different piece of machinery to consider, as well as experiences quite a different usage style compared to your car. But like a car, it provides a pretty essential service for you most days, and not maintaining it is just as much of a pain. Keep reading to learn a little more about the boiler preventive maintenance services we offer at Ace Hi Plumbing, and how our team can help you.

Boiler Preventative Maintenance

At the very least your boiler or tankless hot water heater should be serviced every year. This helps keep it running to the best of its ability, and could save you money in the long run. Servicing your boiler is the best way to keep it running, just like your car. Essentially what servicing your boiler boils down to (pun intended), is cleaning the unit, purging the air out of the system, and flushing chemicals through the lines to ensure nothing is clogged and it will help your boiler heat to the best of its potential. If you neglect your boiler it can cause major damage to your pipes if they were to freeze. You can also damage the boiler as soot builds up and it cannot breathe. In the long run it would cost more money and you would do more harm than good if you decide not to service your boiler.

A major problem that boilers can run into is the installer themselves. No matter how confident someone seems in installing one, they may not know how to install to manufacturers’ specifications. This can cause major problems down the line as the gas pressures may not be to the manufacturer’s specifications. This is something that we check when we do boiler servicing. We make sure there is enough flow through the combustion air line as well as the ventilation air line. Gas pressure is also critical in the operation of a boiler. When we service a boiler this is also one of the key things that need to be inspected. If this is not at the correct pressure the boiler may not run at its peak efficiency.

Additionally, one of the most important things to check when you service a boiler or any gas-fired appliance for that matter is the CO level in the vents. The best possible number that your CO levels can be at is 0 ppm. In a perfect world, we wouldn’t need to check for CO, but we don’t live in a perfect one. There is no realistically healthy level of CO. If you experience any nausea or lightheaded symptoms you should leave your home and have someone check for CO. If your CO detector goes off you should immediately leave and get a gas company out there to see what’s going on. There is no point in taking the risk of damaging your body.

Another important distinction that should be made to the technician that is going to service your boiler is whether your unit is a tankless boiler, or a cast iron boiler. Both are drastically different in the way they operate and the way they are serviced. Cast iron boilers have huge heat exchangers that have plenty of fins and plenty of soot. These need to be brushed out as when they build up soot they can cause flame rollout which is obviously a fire hazard. Cleaning out these heat exchangers takes lots of work. Each of the fins needs to be individually brushed out and it is a very time consuming and dirty job. Many people wonder why boiler servicing is expensive and this is why. If you want it done the right way it takes time and a knowledgeable technician to do it correctly. And if you want this service done at any point during the year make sure you have it done in the spring or in the fall, as those are the most opportune times to get this kind of work done.
